WORLD HERITAGE KIYOMIZU TEMPLE

Winter of 2023 Rei Omori was exclusively welcomed inside World Heritage Kiyomizu-Temple for a month to create ART inside important cultural property.

Through out her ascetic practice she drew a dragon as large as 8meters wide. The materials were handmade paper that she has been collecting for over a decade. Cut out and patched together by her own hands to create the canvas. 

The dragon was inspired by the huge dragon painting inside Kyo-dou drawn by Nobumoto Okamura from Edo period.

Nobumoto Okamura's dragon has a specific feature in the eyes. People call it 'Happou Nirami' which means it stares into the beholder in all direction.

Rei Omori was able to achieve that same specific feature in the eyes of her dragon.

Closed to the public, her works were privately exhibited towards the people of Kiyomizu Temple on the last day.

When, where, and how the dragon will be shown to public, only the artist and Kiyomizu Temple knows.

2023年冬、大森レイは世界遺産・清水寺の重要文化財内に1ヶ月間迎えられ、ARTを制作した。

素材は１０年以上かけて集めた手漉きの紙。作家自ら切り抜き、貼り合わせて巨大なキャンバスを作り上げ、修行を通して幅８メートルもの大きな龍を描いた。

この龍は、江戸時代の絵師岡村信基によって描かれた径堂の中にある巨大な円龍の絵から着想を得ている。岡村信基の龍は目に特徴があり人々はその目を「ハ方睨み」と呼ぶ。

そしてこの度大森レイの描いた龍も、どの角度からも目が合う様に描かれている。

作家曰く今の段階での「完成の姿」であり、さらにこれからも手を加えて行くと言う。

作品は一般非公開で、彼女の修行の最終日に清水寺の中の人々に向けて作品が展示された。

果たしてこの先何時、何処で、どの様に展示されるのか。

今後の動きに注目である。
